Dimensions: 15.0 x 14.5 x 3.0. The striking ceramic known as Talavera is over 800 years old, originating in the Talavera de la Reina region of Spain. At that time, it was called Majolica. Known for its beautiful glaze work, Talavera was imported to Mexico in the 16th century where it was used to decorate monasteries and churches with tiles and religious figures. Talavera is not turned or tin glazed—the pigments are brushed onto raw or unfired glaze. Each piece takes between 12 and 15 days to complete. It must set for 16 to 18 hours before being liquefied and poured into molds. The pieces are then hand polished and fired for six hours at 1500 (F) degrees, then painted and baked again in an 1800 (F) degree oven. Prehispanic Mexican craftsmen blended the majolica process with their own interpretation of the method to work the clays of the region and incorporated their art forms and colors. Their product came to be known as Talavera. We are happy to pay about 20-25% above 'market' value to our artisans in Mexico in order to create a sustainable business for them as well as in the hopes of bringing up the standard of living of the community at large. Unlike other Mexican import companies we specialize in Mexican Talavera. We stand behind our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. |

NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, works together with talented artisan designers around the world to produce stunning, keepsake treasures. Our mantra is to spread global happiness, so rest assured - we’ll do everything we possibly can to ensure you’re a happy customer. About this item: Angel Cerón masterfully replicates the legendary chac mool sculpture, found in front of the Templo Mayor in Mexico City. Cerón sculpts the ceramic piece by hand depicting a man with elaborate headdress and ornamentation holding a bowl over his belly. It is believed to be designed to hold ritual offerings, perhaps human hearts. The name, chac mool, means red jaguar and was intended to refer to those sculptures found in the Yucatan peninsula, but now it refers to similar sculptures from different pre-Hispanic communities, including Toltec. It serves as evidence of the relationship between all these ancient cultures before the Spanish conquest. - Museum replica(s) - Signed by the artist About our Artist: Angel Ceron comes from a family with generations of artisan experience. He learned the family ceramic techniques from his father, Antonio Ceron Orta, a renowned artisan. Angel began a long study of Mexico's pre-Hispanic cultures and learned the Nahuatl language spoken in ancient Mesoamerica. He uses clay from northern Oaxaca state, the only clay of this kind in Mexico and perhaps in the world. The unique characteristics of this yellow clay make it ideal for his work. |
