Red Ramshorn Snails (aka Bright Red Ramshorn Snails or Red Ram's Horn Snails) are great for adding some color and decoration to your aquarium rig, but also serve some very useful purposes! They essentially act as fish tank clearers by wiping off aquarium glass, live plants, log aquarium decorations, and substrate. These snails consume uneaten fish food and biofilm. Their shell colors are most commonly shades of pink, but the spectrum ranges from bright pink to dark red or maroon. These snails will arrive young and pea-sized, but may sometimes be smaller. Within two months, even the smallest snail will be adult breeding size, and the beautiful shell color will intensify as the snails age. Ultimately, these snails can grow up to 1 or 2 inches in diameter when fully grown. These snails are peaceful and can make a great addition to just about any kind of fish aquarium or planted tank. They are safe with any nonaggressive fish, shrimp, other freshwater snails, and other aquarium animals. They are great for either a deep aquarium or shallow aquarium! NOTE: Ramshorn snails are not picky at all about their water parameters, and they tend to reproduce like crazy in almost any conditions. If you run into problems with snail overpopulation, a few Assassin Snails will quickly take care of the problem. Because of their fast breeding, Ramshorn snails make an excellent live food starter colony for any fish that eats snails, such as Puffer fish. The Chopstick Snail (Stenomelania torulosa) is an excellent scavenger and substrate sifter with a unique, spike-shaped appearance. Though it is native to the warm Sulawesi lake system and other waterways of Indonesia, this snail can thrive in lower water temperatures than many other Sulawesi animals. This snail is very slow moving and spends most of its time climbing aquarium terrain and burrowing in the substrate. It is great at keeping your gravel or aquarium soil naturally aerated and free of biofilm and gases that build up within it, and it can do this without harming any plant root. Feeding and care is very easy for the hardy Chopstick Snail. It requires the same maintenance and conditions as most tropical aquarium snails. It will eat nearly any high-quality dry and frozen foods, but it will also feed heavily on biofilm and decaying plant matter in the aquarium. It does not harm aquarium plants, so it is completely safe to keep in a planted tank. This snail is a very slow aquarium breeder as well (females will only produce one offspring at a time), so you should not have to worry about snail overpopulation in your home aquarium. They are similar in appearance to Malaysian Trumpet Snails, but do not breed nearly as fast. They are peaceful and thus safe to keep with nonaggressive freshwater fish (such as Danio fish, Corydora Catfish, etc.), dwarf shrimp, large shrimp, and other freshwater snails. Basic aquarium supplies are required when raising these snails, such as a tank filter system (e.g. reactor filter, poly filter etc.) and perhaps an aquarium air diffuser (such as an air stones). CARE GUIDELINES: - Temperature: 72° - 86° F (22° - 30° C) - pH: 7.0 - 8.2 - KH: 2 - 12 dKH - Minimum tank size: 5 gallons per snail - Average adult size: 1 - 2.5 (2.5 - 3.8 cm) - Average purchase size: 1/2 - 1 (1.3 - 6.4 cm). |
