Though most driftwood will remain submerged underwater, some driftwood remains slightly buoyant until it is fully saturated and waterlogged. Soak the driftwood in a large bucket as long as possible making sure the entire piece is completely underwater. A minimum period of 1 to 2 weeks is recommended to allow total saturation. Soaking also allows excess tannins that can darken and discolor the water, to leach out. The discoloration caused by the tannins will not harm your aquarium inhabitants but it will lower the pH slightly over time. Some hobbyists take advantage of this feature and utilize the tannins to achieve soft water conditions preferred by many tropical fish. Bleeding Heart Tetras Monitor the soaking driftwood regularly to see if the water needs to be changed. As the water darkens, empty all of the water and gently rinse the driftwood. Fill the bucket with clean dechlorinated or RO water and continue soaking the driftwood. As you repeat this process, you will notice that the water will be less tea-stained. When you no longer notice any significant discoloration for several days in a row, the driftwood is ready for placement. Boiling Driftwood: Boiling driftwood has several benefits. Just like steeping a tea bag in hot water, boiling driftwood in a large stockpot encourages more tannins to leech out faster, thereby shortening the curing process. More importantly, boiling sterilizes the driftwood. | ![]() B003Y3XJWG Price: $29.05 Score: 5.650 Category: Pet Rating: 4.2 Votes: 18 Find similar productsCLASSIC PETBLIS Lifting Diver (Action) 5 inches, 100 g. Daphnia are small aquatic crustaceans that reach about 5mm in size, and are an excellent food source for aquatic pets, especially picky eaters! They are an excellent live food for freshwater tanks and will not pollute your tank’s water. The following lists the primary processes of how we maintain our Daphnia culture: ●Maintenance: ○Water Changes performed at least every other day replacing at least 50% of the water. ○Siphoning the bottom of tank or container that the Daphnia are living in as the food you feed them will collect down there. ○We use aged water rather than aquarium water (due to the possibility of bacteria in our aquariums that could spread to customers--if you don’t plan on selling, you can certainly use your own aquarium water). ■Note: do not use plain freshwater or freshwater that has been treated with Prime as this can kill the culture. ●Feeding: ○We feed them Brewer’s Yeast once a day. It’s time to feed them when the water is clear. If the water isn’t clearing in a couple of days at most, you are likely overfeeding them. ○We use a brine shrimp net to filter out the bigger particles of yeast when feeding (hold the net over the culture and pour the yeast mixture into it). ○Combine the yeast in a small container with aged water or aquarium water. Mix well. ■We don’t actually use a ratio of yeast to water, but will feed until we can no longer see the bottom of the Daphnia container. ■Start small and add more yeast as needed to meet the above specification. ●Additional Tips: ○Avoid having only one culture. It’s safer to maintain at least 2 in the event that the one crashes. It’s very common that cultures crash. ○More volume of water is better for the survival of the culture (we keep ours in 20+ gallon tanks and containers). ○Not necessary, but helpful: ■Lightly aerated water, in our experience, has promoted Daphnia reproduction. | ![]() B08BN22RQV Price: $5.42 Score: 5.495 Category: Pet Rating: 3.9 Votes: 61 Find similar productsJOR Alder Cone Water Conditioner for Betta Fish, Creates Native Habitat, Relieves Stress, Serves As A Nursery and Food Source, Lowers Water pH, Can Be Used in Filter Or Freely in Aquarium, 60 pcs JOR. Driftwood is an essential component for decorating a naturalistic aquarium. While many retailers sell artificial pieces of simulated driftwood, our pieces are REAL Spider Wood! We are pleased to be able to offer pieces of all sizes to fit the smallest to largest aquariums. Spider Driftwood is an excellent choice for aquascaping. This driftwood is known for its tiny, twisted branches, and the piece as a whole resembles a mangrove tree. These numerous branches are ideal for providing cover for smaller species of aquatic animals (such as dwarf shrimp and tiny fish). So not only is Spider Wood practical, it is also guaranteed to improve the appearance of any aquarium. In addition to providing dramatic, natural scenery in the aquarium, driftwood plays in an important role in the well-being of any aquarium. It provides shelter for aquarium animals and it can serve as an anchor for plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, and Java Moss or other mosses. Each Spider Wood driftwood piece is unique and will make an attractive addition to any freshwater aquarium! All of our aquarium driftwoods and rocks are treated for aquarium use after simple rinsing. Some driftwoods can initially release tannins in the water, although Spider Wood is among the least likely to do this. Tannins are not necessarily harmful to aquarium plants and animals, but they will lower the pH of aquarium water. To reduce the release of tannins, simply boil the driftwood for a few minutes. If desired, driftwood can be boiled repeatedly until the boiling water does not tan at all in order to completely remove tannins before aquarium use. Otherwise, this driftwood will stop releasing tannins over time with regular aquarium water changes and maintenance. It may float initially when placed in the aquarium, but it will sink within a few days once it becomes soaked with water, or it will soak immediately when attached to a relatively heavy rock. | ![]() B071JRFY11 Availability: Currently unavailable Score: 5.208 Category: Pet Rating: 2.9 Votes: 9 Find similar productsBlack Mystery Snail - 1/2-2 - Algae Eater for Aquariums. They will eat fish or invertebrate pellets and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, kale, spinach, or cucumber. Snails are very sensitive to copper, so watch out for copper if you use tap water in your tank. |
